Medieval Charter Challenge: Round 2, Summer: Marchand Family

Comprised of a man and his son, the Marchand family have secured a lofty position in their short time in Wildewood, owning the new weekly market – a major place of commerce in the region. James Marchand is a man about town in more ways than one, while his father Bertram is focused on expressing his faith through art and writing. Will James’ rakish ways ruffle feathers in this sleepy town?

The father and son duo charm customers at the marketplace.

Bertram Marchand has been working on a series of illuminated manuscripts depicting stories from the Tome of the Watcher. He hopes that his work will make him known far and wide for his piety.

James engages in a dalliance with Kathryne Poore, much to the chagrin of his father. Being merchants, she’s not marriage material and certainly not worth being caught in flagrante. Neither James or Kathryne are particularly attached to each other and give up their romance easily, at least in public.

To keep his idle hands busy, James indulges in his hobbies when not at the marketplace. He’s quite adept with the lute, but his pottery skills can use some work.

Of course, it doesn’t keep him away from his other hobby.

James meets the other new arrivals in the neighborhood, Robin – mistress of the new Foundling home – and Katarina Mercer. She’s the only woman even close to his status and owns a highly successful business. They have two very different outlooks on life, but that doesn’t mean that has to stand in the way of a strategic partnership.

Their courtship continues as is proper with just a slight hitch… They are to be wed on the next Quarter Day, the beginning of Fall.

Elsewhere, Kathryne Poore gives birth to two sons, Jon and Paul. As an unwed mother and a resident of the Almshouse, she is compelled to give up her children to the Foundling home. Kathryne gladly accepts – she isn’t interested in raising children.

On Fall Quarter Day, James and Katarina are married in the Church of the Watcher with Katarina’s children, the Astlys, and Bertram in attendance. After taking a minute to compose himself after the ceremony, James moves in with Katarina, giving her his name and his status. The reality of married life hasn’t quite set in yet, but soon enough…

The Marchand household made a phenomenal §17,689 this summer and paid §5,807 in taxes. The town treasury is now at §37,030!

Gameplay Stuff

  • It was kind of difficult to get the markeplace up and running. It’s a big lot with a lot of stuff to buy, but everyone was mostly interested in sniffing the clover around the well!
  • Almost everything you see here was ACR or autonomous. I did have to push Katarina and James together, (She’s Knowledge and he’s Romance) but they actually grew attracted to each other pretty quickly. I wasn’t expecting him to fall in love at all!
  • Betram was pretty boring, just playing the “manuscripts” all day. (It’s a computer.) He did write a novel, bringing in almost §3,000!
